Keep your tree happy and healthy!
Follow these simple steps to insure your tree stays fragrant, beautiful, and healthy throughout and beyond the holiday season!
- Choose your tree’s “place of honor” – You should make sure your tree has a level place inside your home to sit and that it isn’t placed too close to any heat sources (air vent/fireplace/baseboard heater) that could dry it out and damage the tree. Ideally, you also want to find a spot where the tree gets at least a little bit of natural light each day, even if it isn’t direct sunlight.
- Give it a drink! – Your living tree, just like any potted plant, needs to be watered regularly. It can be tough to reach the base through all the needles (especially for the bigger trees), but having a watering can with a long spout can really help. Make sure you water the tree just until you can see water beginning to seep out of the bottom of your pot and into the plant saucer. Don’t over-water! Too much water will harm your tree as surely as not giving it enough water.
- Dress it up! – One of the oldest traditions of Christmas is decorating your tree. You’ve taken a great first step in helping the environment by having a living tree, now if you want to “take it up a notch”, why not try decorating your tree with an eco-friendly theme? If you choose to do so, take a picture of your tree and submit it to our First Annual Tree dECOrating Contest! Click here for more info.
- Enjoy Christmas, then get ready to wave “bye-bye”! – Take pleasure in your beautiful tree throughout the holiday season, and when Christmas has passed, prepare your tree for pickup. Make sure to remove ALL lights and tree decorations – they won’t be of much use when your tree has been replanted in the great outdoors! Next, if possible, move your tree near the door to facilitate a quicker, easier pick-up. If you won’t be home at the time of your pick-up, make sure you place the tree outside! Finally, say your goodbyes and feel good about the fact that you saved your tree’s life this year!
