1/26/2012: We Have A WINNER!!!
Silvana & Alex Procopio
There were a lot of GREAT entries this season and it was a very hard decision. Our judges loved the fact that they used natural items from their own backyard, LED lights, and even used etsy.com. Actually, here’s a breakdown of everything they used:
- LED lights
- Ornaments made of magazine paper, by a friend of ours and her sister.
- Recycled glass and metal star, handmade by a shop from www.etsy.com
- Hand-crafted moose made with manzanita tree twigs and reindeer moss, bought from an individual seller at www.etsy.com
- homemade bags of organic corn and tamarind seeds. The bag and bow were from received gift wrappings.
- fallen pine cones from our pine trees in the backyard
- PEACE sign made with Scrabble pieces found at different thrift stores.
- natural fiber hand-crafted balls
The Port of San Diego hosts their own contest with their employees: They make ornaments they made themselves from re-purposed or recycled materials. They even get bonus points if the ornaments could be recycled after the holidays. They had 15 submissions and over 50 fellow employees voted. Then they had invited Christine as a guest judge to pick the winner from the top three submissions. What a great way to inspire environmental awareness and some fun team building in the office!
Participate in Adopt-a-Christmas-Tree’s living Christmas Tree dECOrating contest!
Since 2009, Adopt-a Christmas-Tree has held an environmentally friendly tree decorating contest. The winning tree will be one purchased from Adopt-a-Christmas-Tree that has been decorated with an ecologically responsible theme. For instance, LED lights instead of regular, or even a tree decorated with “green” ornaments. Let your imagination run wild! To submit your order, take a picture of your finished tree and email it to Orders@adoptachristmastree.com. Also, if possible, describe what you used to decorate your tree and let us know how sustainable the decorations are. The submission selected as grand prize winner will receive a free tree of their choice for the following year.
The grand prize winner for 2010 season went to the Port of San Diego- FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW!

When they entered in 2009, we received a wonderful email complete with pictures and a full account of how the tree was decorated – see the email here:
“Attached are photos of our adopted Christmas Tree, fully dECOrated!! We hosted our own contest here at the Port in order to decorate the tree. We asked all employees to hang ornaments they made themselves from re-purposed or recycled materials. They got bonus points it the ornaments could be recycled after the holidays. We received nearly 30 submissions, with ornaments made from things such as aluminum cans, paper from the recycle bin, old bike sprockets, corks, etc. Photos of a few examples are also attached. The lights on the tree are LED lights, and the angel topper is made also by hand from materials found at home and incorporates the LED lights.
Our adopted tree really inspired a tremendous amount of environmental awareness and opportunity for education this holiday season, in addition to tons of cheer!
Thank you,
Cody
